Prof Teo Kok Lay, the Associate Dean (Research and Postgraduate Studies) of the School of Mathematical Sciences, Sunway University, was recently appointed an Academician of the International Academy for Systems and Cybernetic Sciences (IASCYS), in recognition of his outstanding contributions to research and practice in systems and cybernetic sciences.

Prof Teo is the only Malaysian on the list of Academicians of IASCYS, which includes 83 renowned researchers from different countries.

“The International Academy for Systems and Cybernetic Sciences (IASCYS) was founded in 2010 as a body of the International Federation for Systems Research (IFSR). The essential aim was not only to honour outstanding scientists in the fields of systems science and cybernetics and to facilitate high-level interaction between them, but also to develop a holistic and interdisciplinary viewpoint to span, both in education and research activities, the gaps between traditional sciences.”

Prof Teo received his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Ottawa, Canada. Before he was appointed Associate Dean (Research and Postgraduate Studies) in the School of Mathematical Sciences, Sunway University, he was with the University of New South Wales, Australia. He has also worked at theNational University of Singapore, Singapore, and the University of Western Australia, Australia previously.

In 1996, he joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, Curtin University of Technology, Australia, as a Professor. From 1999 to 2004, he was the Chair Professor of Applied Mathematics and Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, China. He returned to Curtin University as a Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics from 2015 to 2010. He was the John Curtin Distinguished Professor at Curtin University from 2011 until 2019 and was then appointed as John Curtin Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Curtin University.

Prof Teo had completed numerous research projects funded by the Australian Research Council and the Research Grant Council of Hong Kong. He has successfully supervised over 40 PhD students and 50 postdoctoral/research fellows.

In addition, Prof Teo was the winner of the 2013 John de Laeter Research Leadership Award, Curtin University, which is the highest award given by Curtin University. According to the 2022 Edition of the Ranking of Top Scientists published by Research.com, a leading academic platform for researchers, Teo was ranked #197 in the field of Mathematics and #751 in the field of Electronics and Electrical Engineering.

In terms of publications, Prof Teo has published 6 books and numerous SCI-listed journal papers. The software package, MISER3.3, for solving general constrained optimal control problems was developed under his leadership.

Prof Teo also serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Industrial and Management Optimization; and editorial board member of several reputable journals, including Automatica, Journal of Global Optimization, Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, Optimization and Engineering, Discrete and Continuous Dynamic Systems, Optimization Letters, and Applied Mathematical Modelling.

His research contributions include optimal control theory for distributed parameter systems, control parameterization with time scaling transformation for optimal control computation, portfolio optimization under a minimax rule, computational methods for optimization problems with functional inequality constraints and its applications, particularly for optimal filter designs.
