A New Era of American Education in Malaysia

Thanks to an exciting new collaboration between Sunway University’s School of American Education (SAE) and Arizona State University (ASU), students in Malaysia can now dive into a top-tier American education right at home.

This dynamic partnership blends ASU's innovative learning methods, global curriculum, and student-centred approach with Sunway’s vibrant campus and resources – giving Malaysian students the best of both worlds.

Better together

By teaming up with ASU, Sunway University is opening the doors to an array of educational possibilities for students eager for an enriched American education experience.

Through the collaboration, SAE is tapping into a treasure trove of academic resources and a curriculum that mirrors ASU’s esteemed standards.

Through the American Degree Transfer Programme (ADTP), students can now maximise their credit transfer to Arizona State University as the courses are integrated seamlessly with its credit system.

Students will also benefit from ASU’s academic structure from the beginning of their degree study.

This flexibility provides Malaysian students a pathway to an international degree from a university ranked No.1 in the US for innovation by US News and World Report (2016 – 2025) – ahead of MIT and Stanford for 10 consecutive years.

Why American education matters

American education is known for its dynamic and comprehensive approach. Here’s what students at Sunway’s SAE can expect:

> Holistic learning through liberal arts

An American education emphasises liberal arts, encouraging students to study across fields, even outside their major. This interdisciplinary approach builds a broad academic foundation, critical thinking, and social responsibility, preparing students for complex global challenges.

> Flexibility to explore and decide

Students don’t have to lock in their major right away. The general education structure allows them to test out different subjects before deciding. This flexibility means they can even take on double majors or add a minor that fits their evolving interests and career goals.

> Industry exposure and practical learning

ASU’s cutting-edge facilities and commitment to practical learning provide students with real-world experience through internships, co-ops, and projects. This hands-on approach bridges classroom learning with workforce skills, supported by solid student services.

> Innovation, critical inquiry, and creativity

American universities prioritise critical thinking over rote learning. Students engage in discussions, challenge ideas, and collaborate with faculty on research, fostering curiosity and independence, which are essential for leadership.

> Global exposure and cultural enrichment

Through SAE’s ASU partnership, students gain international exposure and cultural awareness, whether studying in Malaysia or transferring to the US. This experience nurtures global citizenship and cross-cultural competence, enriching students’ perspectives and preparing them for a diverse world.

In this collaboration, Sunway University offers over 16 approved 2+2 programmes pathway to ASU, allowing students to complete their studies at nearly half the tuition cost of four years in the US.

This pathway is perfect for those driven by curiosity and eager to explore a wide range of disciplines. After IGCSE, students can dive into various majors, with the flexibility to transfer to top US universities, including ASU, when ready.

Innovative degree programmes

With this partnership, SAE will launch three new cutting-edge degree programmes designed to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving job market.

Bachelor’s in Digital Communication (Advertising): Tailored for students aiming to make an impact in the dynamic fields of marketing, media, and public relations.

Through a robust curriculum inspired by ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism, this programme will equip students with skills in the latest digital trends, audience analysis, digital communication strategy, and analytics – skills essential for driving audience engagement in the digital age.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence): Provides students with a solid foundation in AI and computer science, preparing them to be innovators and problem-solvers in tech-driven industries.

This programme emphasises the practical application of AI skills, ensuring graduates are ready to contribute meaningfully to industry, research, and the global community.

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (Honours): Introduces a deep dive into the human mind, preparing students with a nuanced understanding of psychological principles, from individual thought processes to group interactions.

This programme is designed to foster graduates who are knowledgeable in the science of human behaviour, equipping them for careers in psychology, counselling, and human resources, among others.

With a higher percentage of coursework relative to exam-based systems, the American education structure develops practical skills and critical thinking, aligning with the needs of today’s job market.

These programmes give students the advantage of an education focused on hands-on learning, flexibility, and a strong foundation across disciplines.

Students can complete their four-year degree at Sunway University’s world-class campus or transfer to ASU’s renowned US campus for their final year.

As students of both ASU and Sunway, they will earn two degrees and two transcripts upon fulfilling the requirements of each institution, along with the opportunity to participate in two graduation ceremonies – one at each university.

Additionally, with a saving of up to 70% of what it would cost for four years in the US, this programme provides a high-quality American education that’s both affordable and prestigious.

For those who choose to spend their final year at ASU in the US, the Optional Practical Training Programme allows them to gain valuable work experience in the US.
