Sunway Malls, in collaboration with the Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) and Sunway University, recently hosted an impactful seminar and networking event on the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in the retail and food and beverage (F&B) sectors. The event saw an impressive turnout with over 50 MRCA members in attendance, including distinguished representatives from Valiram Group, Starbucks, Parkson, Poh Kong Holdings, and Focus Point Holdings, among others. The presence of MRCA President Datuk Ken Phua and past President Datuk Seri Garry Chua added to the event's significance.
Insightful Presentations on ESG Implementation
The seminar featured presentations from four esteemed speakers, each contributing valuable insights into different aspects of ESG implementation:
1. Mr Ng Wee Chiang, Sunway Property and Facility Management (Sunway PFM): Mr Ng focused on energy efficiency and conservation, highlighting the substantial energy consumption within the retail and F&B sectors. He emphasised the urgent need for integrating energy-saving practices, referencing the Energy Transition Index and Malaysia's national roadmap. Practical solutions, from simple behavioural adjustments to advanced technology implementations, were discussed. Mr. Ng showcased best practices in design, such as using LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances, alongside effective maintenance strategies. Real-world examples demonstrated the impact of smart energy management systems, reinforcing sustainability's economic and environmental benefits. Sunway PFM continues to lead as a role model in sustainable development.
2. Associate Professor Dr. Arsalan Zahid Piprani, Sunway Business School: Dr. Piprani stressed the critical importance of sustainable sourcing, balancing social, ethical, environmental, and economic considerations in obtaining goods and services. He highlighted that sustainable sourcing addresses growing consumer demand and regulatory pressures, providing a significant competitive advantage. Key principles include environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic viability, contributing to risk reduction, enhanced brand reputation, cost savings, and innovation. He outlined steps for implementation and discussed overcoming challenges such as cost concerns, supply chain complexity, data transparency, and organisational resistance.
3. Mr Augustine Wong, Sunway College and STYLO's Fashion Design Technology Hub: Mr Wong focused on sustainable packaging and good design, noting that products marketed as sustainable are growing significantly faster than non-eco-friendly alternatives. He emphasised the concept of "GOOD DESIGN," characterized by innovation, usefulness, aesthetics, honesty, longevity, and environmental friendliness. Addressing the rising consumer demand for sustainable products, especially among Millennials and Gen Z, he stressed the need for brands to maintain transparency, authenticity, and social responsibility. Mr. Wong showcased genuine sustainability efforts and discussed the role of technology in supporting sustainability, including augmented reality, innovative manufacturing, and blockchain for transparent supply chains.
4. Jessica Jong, Head of Sustainability & Quality Assurance, Sunway Malls: Ms. Jong emphasised the importance of sustainable practices, advocating for doing well by doing good. She provided alarming statistics on waste generation in Malaysia, highlighting innovative projects that transform waste into valuable products, such as turning pineapple leaf fibres into fashion items and converting wood waste into thermoplastics for sunglasses. These initiatives underscore the potential for significant environmental impact through better waste management and recycling practices.
Networking and Closing Remarks
The seminar concluded with a networking event featuring delectable offerings from sponsors like Sangkaya, Secret Recipe, US Pizza, HWC Coffee, Chin Swee Food, and more. MRCA members engaged in lively discussions and networking at the Graduate Center lounge. To wrap up the event, Associate Professor Dr. Calvin Cheong, Deputy Dean of Sunway University, wisely remarked, "Don’t complicate ESG implementation, just take action to start," resonating deeply with the mission of promoting sustainability.
This seminar marks a significant step towards fostering a greener and more sustainable future for the retail and F&B industries, demonstrating the collective commitment of Sunway Mall, MRCA, and Sunway University to drive positive change.
