Sunway University Welcomes Fulbright Scholar Dr Courtney Yuen from Harvard Medical School
We are thrilled to be hosting Fullbright Scholar from Harvard Medical School, Dr Courtney Yuen for the next 5 months at School of Medical and Life Sciences, Sunway University.
Dr Yuen is an epidemiologist and Associate Professor in the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. After earning a PhD at Harvard University in chemistry, she spent two years in Uganda as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer and two years at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer before assuming her current faculty position.
Her research focuses on combatting the global tuberculosis epidemic. She conducts implementation research around tuberculosis service delivery in community and primary care settings. She also conducts epidemiologic analyses to evaluate the impact of tuberculosis policies and to understand the impact of health care access barriers on health outcomes.
She is Associate Director for Implementation Science at the Harvard University Center for AIDS Research and course director for “Implementation Science for Global Health Delivery” at Harvard Medical School and “Epidemiologic Methods for Global Health” at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. Her work has included collaborations in Peru, Kenya, Pakistan and the USA, and has been funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute.
Dr Yuen is based at Sunway University as part of her scholarship to explore opportunities for future research and educational collaborations between our institutions. To help lay the groundwork for future collaborative activities, she will be conducting a research project with Deputy Dean (Research and Sustainability) Professor Long Chiau Ming to understand current practices and opportunities for improve integration of tuberculosis and diabetes management in Malaysia. She will also collaborate with Sunway faculty to teach a workshop on scientific manuscript-writing to Sunway students, based on a workshop that she leads every year at Harvard Medical School.
