Cooking Demo and Book Launch: Edible Waste: A Cookbook

On September 23, 2024, Sunway University kicked off its "Campus with a Conscience: Local Action for Global Goals 2024" initiative with a vibrant cooking demonstration and the much-anticipated launch of Edible Waste: A Cookbook. This event celebrated sustainability, mindful living, and culinary creativity.

The day’s highlight was a captivating cooking demo led by Chef Soon Pau Voon, the cookbook’s author, alongside his enthusiastic student. Together, they prepared Churros with Vanilla Sugar and Chocolate Sauce live on stage, showcasing how simple ingredients can be transformed into a delectable dessert. The crowd eagerly watched, and their excitement grew as they savoured the fresh churros, their happiness radiating with each bite.

Following the cooking demo, the book launch officially commenced. Associate Professor Dr Daniel Chong Ka Leong, CHT, Dean of the School of Hospitality and Service Management, Sunway University (SHSM), and Ms Carol Wong, Head of Sunway University Press, jointly officiated the event.

Edible Waste: A Cookbook has already garnered significant international recognition, winning the prestigious Best Food Waste Cookbook award and securing the position of 3rd Best Digital Cookbook at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2022. 

The book serves as both an educational tool and an invitation to explore the art of mindful food waste management. Chef Soon's collection of innovative recipes encourages readers to reimagine kitchen scraps and leftovers, unlocking a world of delicious possibilities while championing sustainability.

The event left the crowd inspired, uniting food lovers and eco-conscious individuals in their shared commitment to making a positive impact. With its successful launch, Edible Waste: A Cookbook is poised to inspire more conscious cooking and sustainable practices both locally and globally, making it a perfect fit for the “Campus With A Conscience” initiative.
