Application Stage
- Q: How can I apply for APEL.A at Sunway University?
A: You can apply for APEL.A at MQA’s portal and select Sunway University as the PPA of your choice. You will receive an automated email to register at Sunway University’s URL. Click on that link and fill up the required fields. APEL Unit of Sunway University will contact you after receiving your submission. Alternatively, you can walk in to or call the Marketing Dept of Sunway University and our friendly and helpful counsellors will guide you through.
- Q: When can I apply for APEL.A at Sunway University?
A: You can apply for APEL.A anytime and be placed into the next nearest APEL Intake. Main APEL intakes are in Apr, Aug and Dec each year. As such, you are advised to apply for APEL.A at least 1 month before the APEL intake or 6 months before your main programme intake.
- Q: What are the requirements to sit for an APEL.A Assessment?
A: The requirements differ for the different levels of APEL.A. Refer to the following table for further information:
Level Requirements APEL T-3 - At least 19 years old in year of application
- Relevant work experience
APEL T-4 - At least 20 years old in year of application
- Relevant work experience
APEL T-6 - At least 21 years old in year of application
- Relevant work experience
APEL T-7 - At least 30 years old in year of application
- Possess at least STPM/Diploma/equivalent
- Relevant work experience
- Q: I will only turn 30 years old on 30 Dec this year. Am I eligible to apply for APEL T-7?
A: Yes, you have met the age requirement if you turn at least 30 years old in the year of application. However, remember to check for other T-7 requirements too such as having a recognised Diploma or STPM and relevant work experience in the area you are applying for.
- Q: Is there a fee for me to take the APEL.A Assessments?
A: Yes, the assessment fees are as published by MQA. From 1 Jan 2024 onwards, the fees for T-3 or T-4 is RM240, the fees for T-6 is RM370 and the fees for T-7 is RM560.
- Q: How long is the duration for me to obtain an APEL.A Cert?
A: Generally, it will take roughly 17 weeks from the Orientation, Assessments and for the results to be released. Another 4 weeks is estimated for self-assessment and registration process prior to the Orientation.

A: Depending on the APEL.A level you’re applying for, the following are the assessment components you need to sit for.

- Q: What are the areas tested in the Aptitude Test and what is the level of difficulty?
A: There are 4 main areas tested: Numerical Literacy, English Literacy, Bahasa Melayu Literacy, General Knowledge & Critical Thinking. Refer to the following table for more information.
- Q: What do I need to show in my portfolio?
A: For your portfolio, you need to show evidence from your formal, informal and non-formal experiential learning of the following competencies:
- Knowledge and Understanding
- Cognitive Skills
- Functional Work Skills
- Personal & Entrepreneurial skills
- Ethics & Professionalism
- Practical work skills
- Interpersonal & Communication skills
- Digital & Numeracy skills
- Leadership, autonomy & responsibility
An APEL Advisor will be appointed to guide you on what are the suitable evidence to compile into your portfolio.
- Q: Can I re-sit for the assessments if I fail it?
A: For the aptitude test, you may re-sit up to a maximum of 2 times only. There is a cooling off period of 3 months for your preparation before the second re-sit. Charges apply for re-sits and re-submissions.
- Q: Can I add more evidence to my portfolio after submission?
A: No. You can only add more evidence to a portfolio during the resubmission. You may only re-submit the portfolio after a 6 months cooling off period.
- Q: Why is there a requirement for cooling-off periods for Aptitude Test re-sit and/or Portfolio Re-submission?
A: The cooling-off period is for candidates to ensure that they have prepared adequately for the Aptitude Test and/or obtained the necessary evidence for Portfolio.
Results & Certificate
- Q: Can I apply to a programme at Sunway University if I obtain an APEL.A cert from another PPA?
A: Yes, if the APEL.A Cert you obtained is from a PPA (Terbuka).
- Q: I have passed the APEL.A assessments but have not yet received my APEL Certificate. Can I apply to enrol into a Sunway University programme?
A: You may apply to enrol in Sunway University using the official Result Notification letter from MQA. However, you are reminded to provide Sunway University with your APEL.A certificate within your first semester of studies.
- Q: Can I join a master programme under the fully research mode in Sunway University using APEL.A T-7 Certificate?
A: No. The AEPL T-7 provision at Sunway University only include programmes under the coursework or mixed-mode mode. It does not include programmes under the fully research programmes.
- Q: Does the APEL.A Certificate have a validity period?
A: Yes, each APEL.A Certificate is valid for 5 years from the date your APEL.A assessment results is released.
- Q: Can I use APEL.A Certificate to apply for jobs?
A: No, the APEL.A Certificate can only be used to fulfil the entry requirements of the programme of interest.
