Building on Brownfield Sites

SDG 11.4.9

Sunway University's dedication to environmental sustainability is not a mere statement but a living example of how higher education institutions can lead by example.

The University is developed on a reclaimed former mining brownfield site, with all ongoing campus expansion taking place within the same footprint. The transformation of this previously barren mining landscape into a functional and sustainable urban precinct demonstrates deliberate action to prioritise brownfield redevelopment in accordance with SDG 11. By reusing degraded land rather than extending into greenfield areas, the University reduces environmental impact, supports compact urban growth, and contributes to the long-term sustainability of the surrounding smart city ecosystem.

Sunway University is dedicated to championing sustainability efforts within and around the campus by instilling sustainable practices into the various aspects of the university experience such as ensuring high standards in sustainability research, sustainable work practices and sustainable consumption.
