Teaching Fellow and Head Chef Patrick Siau, from the School of Hospitality (Sunway University) has recently been appointed by the Professional Culinaire Association as Team Coach for the Asian Pastry Cup 2018. He previously participated in the 2010 edition as well as the World Pastry Cup in 2011 in the capacity of Malaysia National Pastry Team Captain.
The Malaysia National Pastry Team will be participating in the Asian Pastry Cup (APC) – 24 & 25 April 2018. As the largest 'live' pastry competition in Asia, the APC is the most spectacular and highly accredited competition in its category. It aims to promote pastry excellence and professionalism, and also serves as the official pre-selection platform for the World Pastry Cup 2019 in Lyon, France.
“I am so proud to represent Malaysia and feel honoured that I have been selected to represent this team. I have always believed in our University’s motto – Fortuna Eruditis Favet - Fortune Favours the Prepared Mind. With strong will, passion and patience, I have always challenged myself to perfect the art of pastry production, ensuring that the end result is both innovative and exciting. I would like to thank the Dean and my colleagues at the School of Hospitality for their trust and full support; and I shall bring home the glory and honour for our country” said Chef Patrick.
Since its inception in 2006, the APC has grown steadily in stature and prestige to become a major platform for talented pastry professionals in Asia. Acclaimed by industry professionals, APC provides pastry chefs with the opportunity to demonstrate their pastry skills, creativity and talent to a panel of experienced judges as well as to inspire an enthusiastic audience.
Dean of the School of Hospitality, Professor Marcus Stephenson commented: “I am delighted to hear the news that Chef Patrick has been appointed as the national coach of the pastry team. This is excellent news for the School as it clearly illustrates that we have people in positions that are highly skilled and deeply respected. I am not completely surprised by Patrick’s recent selection because I am aware that he has a very good reputation. He is a very industrious and creative individual who always works hard to achieve his objectives. I wish him and his team every success”.
Top teams from within Asia, all of whom are top-ranked pastry professionals with exceptional skills, will have 8 hours to prepare and present a chocolate showpiece, a sugar showpiece, 18 plated desserts and 2 chocolate cakes. In addition to Chef Patrick’s role in the team, the Malaysia National Pastry Team will also consist of a chocolate specialist (Tay Chee Siang) and a sugar specialist (Tan Wei Loon).
