Challenges and Coping Strategies: A case of Korean TV products’ influence on Muslim travellers
The School of Hospitality (SOH) recently held its 6th Research Seminar Series titled “Challenges and Coping Strategies: A case of Korean TV products’ influence on Muslim Travellers” by Dr Teh Pek Yen.

Dr Teh Pek Yen is a Senior Lecturer from the School of Hospitality, Sunway University. She graduated from University of Malaya and her research interest is focused on the influence of the Korean Wave, also known as Hallyu, in Asia. Apart from that, Teh Pek Yen also researches on tourists’ behaviour and sustainable tourism.
She shared her findings and qualitative research experiences focusing on the challenges and coping strategies of Muslim travellers when visiting Korea as Malaysia is one of the countries is heavily influenced by Hallyu since the late 1990s, starting with popular Korean TV series Winter Sonata and Dae Jang Geum.

Dr Daisy Gayathri Kanagasapapathy, Chair of Research and Enterprise Committee, School of Hospitality, stated: “This research brought an interesting outlook on how celebrity involvement is important in creating a sense attachment towards places in this era”.
