ImagineAging runs another successful workshop towards developing collaborative research - ReThink: Policy for Sustainability

The ImaginAging team (Dr Min Hooi Yong from Department of Psychology, Dr Clarissa Lee from from Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development, School of Interdisciplinary Studies, and Associate Professor Jun Shan Hwang from Department of Medical Sciences, School of Healthcare and Medical Sciences) together with their collaborative partners from Petrosains (Dr Daniel Loy) and United Nations University (UNUN-IIGH) (Dr Shiang Cheng Lim) recently concluded a half day workshop with government officials from the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KWPKM) and non-government organisations (NGO). The officials represented the policy makers at the Ministerial level and staff from Department of Social Welfare, as well as operational staff from Rumah Seri Kenangan (a home for the elderly). They also had representatives from YMCA KL, and a community dwelling senior citizens group.

This workshop was aimed at helping the KWPKM identify and distil the pressing problems in their national policies specifically on older adults and the disabled community. This time around, they used participatory design as a research technique and focused on the existing national policies and action plans (Pelan Tindakan). The findings of this workshop will be used as part of the ImaginAging team’s grant application for Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) UK, Follow-on Funding for Impact and Engagement Scheme (FoF) funded as a part of the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF).

The project is part of the Lancaster University Global Challenge Research Fund (GCRF seedcorn) that was awarded by Lancaster University in 2017 for collaborative research groups between Sunway University and Lancaster University on sustainable development goals. The team aspires for this collaboration to achieve the best of success in obtaining results that contribute to improving the quality of life of senior citizens and the disabled.
