Sunway Academics invited to the 1st International Congress of Psychology, Health and Education in Oviedo, Spain

Professor Nigel Marsh and Associate Professor Dr Lin Mei-Hua from Sunway University’s Department of Psychology recently took part in the 1st International Congress of Psychology, Health and Education. The congress was held in Oviedo, Spain and was organised by the University of Oviedo School of Psychology’s ADIR Research Group and the University of Almeria’s Scientific Association for Education Psychology and Education Research.

The purpose of the congress was to fortify exchange of knowledge in the fields of health and education and promote new teaching and learning practices based on the most recent scientific evidence. It was open to participation by all those interested in prevention and optimisation of health in its various facets (physical, psychological and educational) and from different perspectives (psychology, nursing, occupational therapy, education, etc.).

In June 2016 Professor Marsh had been a Visiting Professor at the University of Oviedo and he gave an invited paper to the VIII International Congress of Psychology and Education at the University of Alicante in Spain. Following this he was approached by Professor José Carlos Núñez Pérez and invited to organise and coordinate a symposium for the November 2017 Congress. Professor Marsh’s symposium was entitled Human cognition: Lifespan perspectives and he invited his Sunway University colleague Dr Lin and three colleagues from the United Kingdom, Dr Paul Fisher (University of East Anglia), Dr Nenna Ndukwe (NENNA Consulting Ltd.), and Dr Peter Walker (Lancaster University), to contribute to the symposium.

The Congress had a variety of international speakers including speakers from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, Kennesaw State University, and John Hopkins University. Dr Lin’s contribution to the symposium was a paper entitled Exploration of national differences in leadership selection based on trustworthiness. In addition to coordinating the symposium Professor Marsh contributed to a paper presented by Dr Anna Bujnowska, a colleague from the University of Oviedo Health Sciences’ School Learning, Difficulties and Academic Performance Research Group. This paper was entitled Determinants of future anxiety in parents of disabled children.

Professor Marsh reported that the symposium team were made to feel very welcome by their Spanish colleagues and noted that the President of the Congress, Professor Núñez Pérez from the University of Oviedo, personally attended their symposium and gave his thanks that the team had travelled to Spain and added to the international prestige of the Congress.
