The School of Hospitality facilitate ‘Youth Programme 2018’
Students from the BSc (Hons) in Conventions and Events Management recently provided event support and services to the recent UFI's (Global Association of the Exhibition Industry) Youth Programme 2018. The involvement of the students and the effectiveness of their delivery formed part of their assessment programme. Students were involved in a range of necessary tasks relating to the event’s programme, MC’s script, audio-visuals, lighting & room temperature, signage, help-desk, registration, attendee parking, and speaker and guest relations.
The Malaysian Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers (MACEOS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the School to assist in internship placements for our students. The School is also a member of the Business Events Academic Council (BEAC) under the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MYCEB), working together in the capacity of education, training and curriculum design, as well as promoting and educating future employees and employers of the business events industry.
These two organisations have provided students within the School of Hospitality with a platform to launch live events, seek internship opportunities, fulfil job placements and search for networking opportunities. As the School is a member of both organisations, there are significant opportunities to educate and train business event graduates.
Ms Carine Sire, UFI's Regional Manager (Europe), graced the event with her key note talk which created awareness amongst youth on the impacts and trends of the exhibitions sector of the business events industry.
The Programme Leader of the BSc (Hons) in Conventions and Events Management programme, Ms Suhaini Ibrahim, said: “On behalf of the School, I would like to thank Ms Carine Sire, MACEOS and MyCEB for making the event possible for our students. We would also like to thank students and academic staff from colleges and universities around the Klang Valley, as well as industry professionals who made time to come and support us. This event was very productive and students learnt a lot about organising and planning events”.
Professor Marcus Stephenson, Dean of the School of Hospitality, also added: “The involvement of the students in this event and the related assessment, clearly indicate how experiential learning is fully embodied within the School’s programme. Moreover, the School strongly believes in the importance of community engagement and the interface between industry and academia. This event was a perfect illustration of that. Importantly, the students did a great job in organising an excellent event, which was closely facilitated by the school’s staff”.
