Vivien Ho (20) from Ipoh selected as the first Oxford-Jeffrey Cheah Graduate Scholar
On Thursday 23rd August 2018 the Oxford-Jeffrey Cheah Graduate Scholarship was launched in Sunway University by the British High Commissioner, H.E. Vicki Treadell CMG MVO. The scholarship is one of a number established by Oxford University where funds raised by a College are matched on a 1:2 basis by the University. After the launch, Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey Cheah AO presented a congratulatory scroll, signed by him and John Bowers QC, Principal of Brasenose College, to Vivien.
Brasenose College, our partner College in Oxford, had proposed to us that an Oxford-Jeffrey Cheah Graduate Scholarship be established in perpetuity for candidates resident in an ASEAN country, but with preference given to Malaysians. The Scholarship would be co-funded by Brasenose and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation in order to qualify for the matching grant.
The proposal was accepted by JCF and the University of Oxford and an agreement was signed in March 2018. Oxford University and Brasenose immediately commenced the selection process and, in July 2018 we were informed by Brasenose that Vivien Ho Wei Wen has been selected.
Vivien was born and brought up in Ipoh, and received her early schooling at SMJK Ave Maria Ave Convent in Ipoh. She was accepted into UKM’s PERMATApintar National Gifted Centre, and in 2014 she proceeded to University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) on a Petronas Scholarship to study for the BS degree in Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology. She graduated summa cum laude in 2018 with a grade point average of 3.92/4.0, the highest Departmental Honors and placement on the Dean’s Honor List.
Vivien will undertake the D.Phil degree in Oxford commencing this September.
