School of Hospitality Welcomes Kuen Cheng High School to Sunway University
Fifty aspiring youths from Kuen Cheng High School visited Sunway University to attend talks and workshops by the School of Hospitality (SOH). The Dean of SOH, Prof Marcus Stephenson provided insights into the programmes offered in the School of Hospitality. He also shared with the students about experiential learning, an emphasis on outside-of-the-classroom learning which fosters an international perspective to teaching, learning and research.
Dr Daniel Chong, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader of BSc International Hospitality Management (BIHM) continued on the momentum with a talk on “Careers in Hospitality, Events and Culinary”. Dr Daniel shared information concerning how his own career in this field began. Upon graduating from high school, the typical career pathway for most of his peers was becoming doctors or engineers. He shared about how his choice to study hospitality is considered an outlier. In this industry, he also mentioned that having to serve with a smile is a “must” for people in this industry. On top of skills and knowledge, individuals who joined this field should have “heart” for service.
It was surely a day packed with a lot of fun when Ms Suhaini Ibrahim, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader of the BSc Conventions and Events Management (BCEM) conducted a hands-on workshop on “Journey into Events Industry”. The event industry may be challenging but offers career fulfilment and motivation. Ms Suhaini also briefed the students on the stages in event management, from planning to executing. This workshop was also paired with interactive group activities where students get their planning and creativity skills put to the test.
The talks and workshops conducted by the School of Hospitality are some of the efforts to engage with potential students to explore learning opportunities within the School and future career prospects.
