Sunway University Culinary Team Great Success at the Battle of the Chefs, Penang
The Battle of the Chefs (BOTC) cooking competition was held at Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang from 5th to 7th August 2022 for three days. The School of Hospitality and Service Management (SHSM) was represented by seven participants, which includes three students (young chefs) and four chefs, competing in four ‘individual’ and two ‘team’ categories.
All participants commenced their research and development, and training sessions for about two months before the competition, taking time in between classes and work. Some days, these training sessions could run from morning till night and whole weekends, especially when the competition day is nearing. With blood, sweat and tears, guidance from the Chefs Team and support from the dedicated assistants, all participants succeeded in bringing home medals.
In total, the team bagged three gold and three silver medals in the following categories:
Gold Medal
- Category - M03: Real California Milk High Tea Set

- Category - M18: Main Course I Chicken

Participants: Chef Nur Fadillah & Chef Norhafizatul Akma Assistant: Jackius Anak Kiking /li>
In addition to these achievements, Chef Yee Suet Rene and young chef Chong Xin Ye also received the 2nd Prize for “Most Outstanding Real California Milk High Tea Set Award” for attaining the second highest marks in their respective category. Overall, BOTC Penang 2022 is a great success for Sunway University Culinary team, and the team is looking forward to making a difference in such competitions in the future!
The Dean of the School of Hospitality and Service Management, Professor Marcus Stephenson, congratulates the team for their hard work and dedication, stating “The School is very proud of the achievements of the team, which reflects substantial professional skills, determination and artistic creativity”.
