Elmina Urban Biodiversity Corridor (EUBC) Restoration
An impactful tree-planting activity took part on 21 October 2024 as part of the ELMINA Urban Biodiversity Corridor (EUBC) Restoration Project, supported by TRCRC (Tropical Rainforest Conservation & Research Centre) aiming to restore biodiversity in the urban landscape by planting 600 saplings to form a green corridor.
Despite the rain from the night before, the volunteers were armed with gloves and small folding knives as they were divided into groups led by TRCRC team leaders, who provided guidance on tree-planting techniques and the importance of biodiversity.
Throughout the day, the volunteers walked through muddy paths to reach the planting site, undeterred by the challenging conditions, ensuring each sapling was carefully planted to protect the 'baby' plants while minimising any harm to the environment. Despite the wet and slippery conditions, the team completed their task in just two hours, successfully planting 600 saplings. The event provided a hands-on learning experience, allowing participants to develop new skills while making a meaningful contribution to environmental conservation.
It was also an opportunity to engage with other participants and TRCRC staff, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose.
The EUBC Restoration was a rewarding experience for all involved that not only enhanced biodiversity in the ELMINA area, but also strengthened the commitment of volunteers to environmental stewardship. As Sunway Student Volunteers continue to engage in such meaningful projects, they look forward to contributing to more green initiatives that support Malaysia’s environmental sustainability goals.
