About ARWU
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) was first published in 2003 by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and is now managed by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. It ranks over 2,500 universities annually, publishing the top 1,000. ARWU uses six objective indicators, including Nobel Prizes, Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, and publications in Nature, Science, and Web of Science™ indexed journals. The ranking is independent of universities or government agencies, requiring no data submission from the institutions. Only universities meeting specific criteria, such as Nobel Laureates or significant research output, are considered.
