Overview
The Master of Science in Computer Science programme will train students to carry out research in current and emerging fields within the Information Technology industry. With the aim of expanding a student's intellect by nurturing advanced knowledge in specialist technical subject areas, our focus is to enable students to lead future developments be it in industry or in academia.
Our students will be integrated as members of our research groups at Sunway University with various opportunities to participate in research alongside experienced supervisors through seminars, workshops, laboratory experiments and fieldwork.
Graduates of the Master of Science in Computer Science will have competencies in theory and practice of ICT and Computer Science. They will be well-equipped with analytical and problem-solving skills to work as senior consultants or in managerial positions in their field of study.
On successful completion of the programme, the graduates will also be awarded with a degree from Lancaster University. They will be awarded two certificates, making them graduates of both Sunway University and Lancaster University.

Programme Structure
The Master of Science in Computer Science consists of two taught modules and one thesis. Students will be required to complete two taught modules, namely Research Methodology and Directed Readings, before they proceed to writing the thesis. By undergoing these two modules, candidates will develop the necessary skills and knowledge to conduct research successfully towards the Master’s degree.
Research Methodology
Students will have an opportunity to examine research designs with methodology as well as data analysis techniques employed by researchers. At the end of this module, candidates will be expected to formulate and submit a proposal for research in an area of their own interest or specialisation.
Directed Readings
This module will provide students with comprehensive reading lists and resources to help them develop their hypothesis or areas of interest. Library skills and training on how to manage information and resources will also be introduced in this module.
Thesis
The MSc is awarded based on the successful completion of a thesis. The thesis should demonstrate proficiency, criticality and mastery in the subject or chosen area of research.

Entry Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computing or related fields with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; OR
- A Bachelor’s degree in Computing or related fields (or its equivalent) with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 but less than of 3.00 can be accepted subject to internal assessment; OR
- A Bachelor’s degree in Non-Computing field with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 can be accepted subject to internal assessment and undergo appropriate prerequisite courses that are equivalent to candidate’s working experience in the Computing or related fields; OR
- A Bachelor’s degree in Non-Computing field with a minimum CGPA of 2.50 can be accepted subject to passing appropriate prerequisite courses; OR
- Other qualifications equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Computing or related fields recognised by the Government of Malaysia must fulfil the following requirement:
i. with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; OR
ii. with a minimum CGPA of 2.00 but less than of 3.00 can be accepted subject to internal assessment; OR - An APEL-A Certification at APEL T-7
English Language Requirements
- IELTS 6.0 or equivalent
Note: Candidates who have completed a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in English would have met the language requirement.
Application Procedure
A) Applicants will be required to submit the following completed and signed documents:
- Sunway Postgraduate application form
- One (1) passport-sized photograph
- Research statement: The statement should briefly describe the research question that the applicant has discussed with his/her future PhD supervisor
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Scholarship application form (if any)
B) The following true copies of documents must be certified:
- Passport (all pages including blank pages - for international students)/Identity card (for Malaysian students)
- English Language Qualification (IELTS/TOEFL/MUET/others) - for international students
- Academic qualifications/results (Certificates and complete transcripts) (Degree/master’s degree/others)
- International applicants must provide certified copies of their entire course transcripts including explanations of the mark schemes used and, where possible, an indication of their class ranking/position in class
C) Two (2) reference letters
Documents will be processed once the application is complete. Incomplete applications will not be evaluated. We will notify you of our final decision as soon as an appropriate supervisory team has been identified.
Research Proposal
The research proposal should comprise between 1,000 and 1,500 words (excluding references), and covers the following structure:
- An appropriate title for the research project (designated supervisor if known)
- Introduction and justification of the study, which includes:
- Research background
- Problem statement
- Research objective(s)
- Research question(s)/hypothesis
- Literature review
- Research methodology
- Proposed research schedule

Bursary
Programme: Master by Research and PhD
Mode of study: Full-time
Financial Support:- Master by Research: 30% tuition fee waiver
- PhD: 50% tuition fee waiver
Award Criteria: Sunway graduates who are meeting the entry requirement for the Master by Research or PhD programmes
Scholarship
Programme: Master by Research and PhD
Mode of study: Full-time
Financial Support:- Master by Research: 60% tuition fee waiver
- PhD: 100% tuition fee waiver
Award Criteria: Sunway graduates who are meeting the entry requirement for the Master by Research or PhD programmes. CGPA >= 3.5 or Merit (or equivalent)
Studentship
Programme: Master by Research and PhD
Mode of study: Full-time
Financial Support:- Master by Research: Not eligible
- PhD: 100% tuition fee waiver including registration and resource fees. Cost of living allowance of RM3,000 per month for 36 months
Award Criteria: Sunway graduates who are meeting the entry requirement for the PhD programmes.
CGPA >= 3.5 or Merit (or equivalent). One (1) published journal article indexed in WOS/Scopus as first or corresponding author. Eligible applicants will be interviewed, and Studentship awards will be given on a competitive basis*Bursary is only offered to Sunway graduates from Sunway Education Group higher education institutions.
