Collaboration with NGOs for SDGs

SDG 17.2.5

Sunway University collaborates with NGOs to address the SDGs through various initiatives. These include student volunteering programs, research projects, and the creation of educational resources. Together, they aim to drive sustainable development and social impact.

Student Volunteering Programmes

Our student volunteer group, Sunway Student Volunteers (SSV), has partnered with NGOs in 2023 on programs aimed at addressing key SDG. Their initiatives highlighted here were focused on SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

SSV and The Lost Food Project

SSV volunteers teamed up with The Lost Food Project to help reduce food waste. The volunteers sorted unsold vegetables and fruit from Pasar Borong, peeling and cutting ten boxes of leeks. Once sorted, the food will be distributed to charities to support those in need. In line with zero-waste guidelines, spoiled and discarded items are used to make compost.

SSV and Alliance of River Three

SSV conducted a river visit at SJ Riverfront Park alongside the Alliance of River Three team to observe the environmental conditions and discuss with an MPSJ officer about obtaining permission to enhance the river’s appearance. During the visit, SSV gained new insights and a fresh perspective, learning to appreciate the presence of biodiversity, as indicated by the variety of plants and insects thriving around the river, despite the litter.

SSV with Great Heart Charity Association

SSV actively raises public awareness through hands-on initiatives. In January 2023, SSV partnered with Great Heart Charity Association for a roadside cleanup. This was a valuable experience for volunteers to inspire the community to stop littering. SSV believes that by consistently taking these actions, we can encourage lasting change.

Research Programme

One of the highlights in 2023 was the winning of the ASEAN Strategic Grant Scheme 2023 through a project titled “Waste Valorization Tackling Carbon Emissions in ASEAN”. This collaborative project involves Professor Mohamed Kheireddine from Sunway University and researchers from other 3 institutions, namely King Mongkut’s University of Technology North Bangkok (Thailand), University of Indonesia (Indonesia) and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (Brunei).

Development of Educational Resources

An online SDG Education Course was developed for the campus community in partnership with the SDG Academy, the education and training division of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), SDG Academy has a mandate of promoting transformative education through the creation and curation of high-quality content on sustainable development, sharing of innovative pedagogies and training models, and providing open access to learning resources for a global audience.
