Education for SDGs in the Wider Community
SDG 17.4.3
Each year, Sunway University organizes dedicated educational outreach activities focused on the SDGs, engaging a broad community that includes alumni, local residents, and displaced individuals.
Artistic Autistic: The Art Exhibition for a Cause with Sunway University Alumna
Wenanita Angang, Miss World Malaysia 2023, Sunway University alumna, and former Vice President of Sunway Student Volunteers, partnered with The National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) and the Student LIFE Centre of Sunway Education Group to organize the "Artistic Autistic: The Art Exhibition for a Cause" at the Art Gallery, Sunway University.
This event aimed to raise awareness and showcase the talents of individuals with autism, while also generating funds for NASOM. Attendees enjoyed artwork created by autistic individuals and musical performances, including a song by an autistic performer named Danea. This initiative supports SDG 10 by promoting reduced inequalities and fostering inclusion for people with disabilities.
Jom Kenali Tanah Melayu, in collaboration with Great Vision Charity Association
On September 3, 2023, the Great Vision Charity Association organized an event that brought local residents consist of children and young teenagers to the National Museum of Malaysia, collaborating with Sunway Student Volunteers to provide insights into the country’s history. The goal of this visit was to enhance education and cultural awareness among the youth, fostering critical thinking skills and inspiration.
These experiences help connect young people to their heritage, promote social and emotional growth, and contribute to the preservation of their nation's cultural identity. Museum visits also expose teenagers to diversity, encouraging civic engagement and helping them become informed and active citizens in the future. Ultimately, education and historical awareness serve as essential foundations for personal development, societal progress, and a brighter, more harmonious future, aligning with SDG 11's focus on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
(Em)Powering the 1%
This electrification project aims to empower displaced communities by providing a sustainable and inclusive energy solution that aligns with SDG 7, which focuses on Affordable and Clean Energy. The initiative combines the expertise and resources of organizations like Sunway University and the Centre of Orang Asli Concerns (COAC), supported by APM Corporate Services Sdn Bhd.
The project targets Kampung Cunex, a vibrant community of 104 Temiar villagers living in the rainforest in Perak. The village has a school that provides early education, currently powered by a small rooftop solar PV system. This project seeks to expand solar power capacity to the community hall, Balai Adat, to accommodate a wider range of uses and meet the community's growing energy needs.
The proposed sustainable energy solution includes a solar PV system with battery storage. After installation, contractors will provide training to community members on how to maintain and operate the system, empowering them to take ownership of the project and ensuring its sustainability. By providing electricity to rural communities, the project enhances access to essential services and opportunities, helping to reduce the urban-rural energy divide and promote social equity.
