Call for Papers

The Asian Law and Society Association (ALSA) is pleased to announce the theme and Call for Papers for the 2023 ALSA Annual Meeting, which will be held on 15-16 December 2023 at Sunway University, Malaysia. A Junior Scholars’ Workshop will be held on 14 December 2023. Both meetings will be held in person.

Conference Theme: Asian Law and Society - Law, Life and Sustainability

Life on earth has never confronted so many existential challenges. Artificial intelligence and robotics have posed challenges to human worth and dignity. The pandemic has taken away the lives of humans as well as animals. The urgent climate crisis has threatened humans, animals, and nature. There is no doubt that we are seeing an existential crisis and the sustainability of all is at stake.

  • To what extent has the law caused and/or exacerbated such a crisis?
  • To what extent may the law be part of solutions? In what ways can the law lend help to sustainability?

The 2023 ALSA Annual Meeting invites Asian law and society scholars to face up to these existential challenges and consider the role of law, if any, in mitigating these challenges. ALSA 2023 also welcomes proposals on any topic concerning the relationship between law and society in Asia.
