Preventing Water System Pollution
SDG 6.3.2
Additional to treating wastewater, Sunway University is also committed in preventing water pollution - toxic and hazardous waste/pollutant, from being discharged from our campus into the sewer or water system. The University has put policies and procedures in managing and handling toxic and hazardous pollutants in place to address the water pollution issues by:
- Complying the proper waste disposal measures to ensure there is no leakage of hazardous/toxic waste into the water system through Hazardous Waste Disposal Policy.
- Carrying out scheduled preventive maintenance on sewerage systems to prevent any waste blockage or leakage into the water system.
The Hazardous Waste Disposal Policy guides the University community to handle the hazardous waste disposal process carefully from handling, packing and labelling the waste according to the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005 by Department of Environment (DOE), Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability. The packed and labeled waste is then stored at the University's centralised chemical storage facility. Then, the waste will be collected twice a year by an outsourced licensed contractor and will be handled according to the required treatment. The waste disposed is measured and recorded.
