Water Consumption in Campus
SDG 6.2.1 and SDG 6.4.2
Water Sources at Sunway University
At Sunway University, we are deeply committed to ensuring water security for our campus community. Sunway University has sourced water supplies from three different sources: the extracted water from our very own lake, the Sunway South Quay Lake, the main water from the local water concessionaire company, and the harvested rainwater.
Mains Water from AirSelangor Sdn Bhd
AirSelangor Sdn Bhd supplies treated water to almost all buildings here in the state of Selangor, and Sunway University is also one of its consumers. Raw water was sourced mostly from surface water collected by dams, identified lakes, and rivers. It is treated at designated AirSelangor's water treatment plants before being distributed for daily consumption.

Extracted Water from the Sunway water catchment area, Sunway South Quay Lake
Alternative to the main water supply, Sunway University also uses the treated lake water from the Sunway South Quay Lake treatment plant. Approximately more than 90% of the water used on our campus is sourced from this treated lake water, showcasing our commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management.
This state-of-the-art water treatment facility with a tracking system has a targeted portable water capacity of 10 million liters per day (MLD). In case of a water disruption, the University will be able to have its own water supply from this plant.
In our effort to address water security issues within the city and maintain the supply of quality water for potable purposes, the University has explored an alternative water supply source. This state-of-the-art water treatment facility within the township allows the University to reduce reliance on water from municipal sources.
The state-of-the-art water treatment process adopts a hybrid of ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis processes to meet the quality standards of potable drinking water. The water treatment plant can operate at a full capacity of 8.5 million liters per day. Based on the World Health Organisation’s recommendation of 165 liters per person per day, this amount is sufficient to serve the water consumption needs of about 51,500 people.

Harvested Rainwater
The University has also implemented rainwater harvesting systems since 2017 and the idea was to reduce constraint on the limited clean water for human consumption. The rainwater is used for non-potable usage, such as for landscape maintenance and cleaning outdoor campus ground areas. In 2023, the education group has saved a total of 817m3 of water through rainwater harvesting.
