Biography
Charles is a renowned marketing academic in the Asia Pacific region with national reputation for the highest quality research, teaching, service and the community engagement focussing on the marketing and broader business field to produce positive impacts on society and to resolve the problems facing society.
Charles has published more than 80 papers in reputed Marketing journals (A* and A ranked journals in ABDC list) including European Journal of Marketing, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Travel Research, Psychology & Marketing, Information Technology & People, Journal of Marketing Management and International Journal of Hospitality Management, among others. In the recent years, Charles has been recognised as a leader in secondary research methods (i.e., systematic literature review and meta-analysis). Charles is ranked in the Top 2% of Scientists in the World based on the Science-wide Author Database developed Stanford University in 2024.
Charles has consistently demonstrated a remarkable commitment to excellence in teaching. Charles believes in the teaching philosophy that students should be co-creators of knowledge than passive learners, and his teaching strategies emanate from this philosophy. He has taught in four universities in Australia. He is a Senior Fellow of HEA (Higher Education Academy, UK) and has received multiple awards for teaching excellence including the Teaching Citations for 2021 and Teaching Excellence Recognition Scheme (TERS) award from Griffith Business School. His pedagogical approach is characterized by innovation, inclusivity, and a genuine passion for authentic learning.
Similar to teaching innovation, based on his extensive PhD supervisory experience, Charles introduced an innovative PhD supervisory approach that makes students highly productive and engaged in their PhD journey and enables them to write multiple (normally more than six) and conceptually distinctive papers targeting top rated journals (mostly ABS 3) along the PhD journey while ensuring completion of their PhD within the allocated time. He immensely contributed to enhancing the HDR supervisory practices not limited to marketing domain but in broader business field. Building on his supervisory approach, he now widely conducts HDR supervisor training programs and mentor HDR supervisors into effective supervisory practices.
In terms of service, he has held various leadership and service roles in the Department, Faculty and University levels throughout his academic career. He has successfully developed and applied simple, softer and very cost-effective approaches to build a research culture in young and growing Business Schools thereby increasing their research outputs in a shorter time. Charles has received several awards during his academic career including ‘Teaching Citations’, “The PhD Thesis of the Year in the Faculty of Business and Law, Swinburne University”, “Best Reviewer Award (2018 Literati Award for Outstanding Reviewer for Marketing Intelligence and Planning) and Best paper award. He has edited special issues for reputed journals including Psychology & Marketing and Journal of Strategic Marketing.
