Afreen Raj Dharani: Sunway University - My Place of Light, Liberty and Learning
In 2019, I joined Sunway University to pursue my undergraduate degree, aiming to maintain my position in 'a class above'. I have always been fascinated by international business. I remember sitting in the library, combing through books and working hard to understand each idea. Nevertheless, my time at Sunway University was not just about textbooks; it taught me how to think creatively and use these ideas in the real world.
Currently, I am employed by a globally renowned financial services firm, and the knowledge I acquired during my degree continues to serve me exceptionally well. One subject, in particular, stands out – Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility. During the challenging times of the pandemic, Dr Rodney orchestrated our learning journey with engaging video lectures and thought-provoking activities, keeping us fully engaged. The emphasis on ethical conduct and social responsibility toward customers and employees remains a daily motivation source for me.
My programme leader, Associate Professor Dr Shehnaz Tehseen, is not just a mentor but my hero. Her unwavering support extended beyond academics, propelling me to excel in various leadership roles such as International Business Representative (2019-2021), President of Sunway Business School Concilium (2020/2021), and President and Co-founder of Sunway International Business School Society (2020/2021). I am immensely grateful for the leadership, teamwork, and time management skills I learned from her, which continue to benefit my current employment. Among all the cherished memories, the university foyer holds a special place in my heart. I deeply miss those post-class gatherings, the piano, the countless moments spent with friends, the laughter, and the joy.
Transitioning to a new country brings homesickness, stress, and an enduring sense of something missing. Sunway University and the industries I encountered in Malaysia turned these challenges into a rewarding journey, shaping me into a more mature and diligent individual.
At 17, I was a shy and introverted individual. Six years later, I have much more confidence, feel better about myself, and have a lifetime's worth of great memories. This journey taught me an important lesson: you can achieve your dreams no matter how old you are. Amazing things can happen when you push yourself out of your comfort zone and bring positivity to everything you do.
My entire degree journey was not just academically exceptional but profoundly emotional. I proudly refer to Sunway University as my second home, where friendships blossomed into a diverse family I hold dear and miss tremendously.
While I may not have named everyone who played a pivotal role in my journey, I extend my heartfelt thanks to all those who know me. Your presence enriched my life beyond measure. I am also profoundly grateful to the management of Sunway University and all my lecturers for their unwavering support. Without all of you, I wouldn't be where I am today.
