In 2018, I was fortunate to be selected for a PhD studentship programme at Sunway University. At the time, I saw it as an opportunity to deepen my knowledge, strengthen my research capabilities and prepare myself for a career in academia and research. Looking back, I realise that it became much more than that. It marked the beginning of a journey that would shape how I think, work, communicate and contribute to the people and communities around me.

Pursuing a PhD is a unique experience. It requires patience, discipline, constant curiosity and the ability to navigate uncertainty. Throughout my doctoral studies, I learned how to examine complex issues systematically, evaluate evidence critically and communicate ideas with greater confidence. These experiences strengthened my capabilities as a researcher and prepared me for academic and research roles after graduation.

My student experience at Sunway was made especially meaningful by the guidance of my supervisors. A PhD can be demanding, but having supportive supervisors made a tremendous difference. Their feedback, encouragement and mentorship helped me become more independent as a researcher and more confident in my own capabilities.

Among the most valuable lessons I gained from my programme were critical thinking and interpersonal skills. Research trained me to question assumptions, analyse information carefully and make decisions based on evidence. At the same time, presenting ideas, receiving feedback, working with supervisors and engaging with other researchers strengthened my communication and relationship-building skills. These capabilities have continued to support me throughout my professional journey.

One of my fondest memories as a student was attending ANZMAC 2019. Participating in an international academic conference allowed me to engage with a wider research community, exchange ideas and experience academia beyond the university environment. It remains a memorable milestone because it broadened my perspective and strengthened my identity as a researcher.

The qualification itself was important, but the experiences behind it were equally valuable. Sunway provided an environment where I could grow academically while developing the interpersonal and professional skills necessary for my career. My transition into employment was fortunately a positive one. I did not experience significant difficulties during my job search, and I consider the opportunities that came my way to be a blessing. The knowledge, research experience and confidence I developed during my time at Sunway helped me move into the next stage of my career with a strong foundation.

One of the aspects of my professional journey that I value most is the opportunity to supervise and guide students. Having once been a student who relied on the advice and encouragement of supervisors, it is meaningful to now be in a position where I can support the development of others. I have also had opportunities to organise and participate in various events, which have further strengthened my leadership, communication, teamwork and organisational abilities.

My PhD experience taught me that education should extend beyond personal achievement and contribute to a wider purpose. This perspective has continued to shape the way I approach my professional and community roles. I currently serve as a Council Member of the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia, Brunei and Cambodia. Through this role, I can contribute to conversations and initiatives related to sustainability, responsible business and positive societal impact.

Perhaps the most meaningful part of my Sunway journey is that it did not end with graduation. Years later, I had the opportunity to return and contribute to Sunway University again. For me, this represents a full-circle moment. I first entered Sunway as a student, receiving knowledge, guidance and opportunities. Today, I can share my own knowledge and experiences, support others in their development and contribute to the university community that played an important role in shaping who I am today.

My journey from PhD student to educator, mentor and changemaker has reminded me that education is not simply about what we achieve for ourselves. Its true value lies in how we use what we have learned to create opportunities, inspire others and make a meaningful difference in the communities around us.
