Tasnia Parvin: From Ambition to Purpose: My Sunway Story

tasnia parvin

Choosing a programme for my bachelor’s degree was a challenging decision because I was unsure which area of business I wanted to pursue. Eventually, I realised that I wanted a programme that would teach me how the different aspects of a business are managed. I chose the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Business Management because it covered a broad range of business disciplines and offered me the opportunity to develop a well-rounded understanding of the business world.

I was particularly attracted to the programme because of its professional accreditation, the dual degree awarded in partnership with Lancaster University, and the Level 5 Diploma awarded by the Chartered Management Institute (UK). Receiving the highest level of the Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship further encouraged me to begin my journey at Sunway University.

Being a Sunway Business School student represents one of the most memorable chapters of my life, and words often fall short when I try to describe this journey. Throughout my studies, I developed valuable skills that have benefited me both personally and professionally. Teamwork was one of the most important skills I gained. Initially, I wondered why we were given so many group assignments, but over time, I understood how valuable they were in preparing me for professional life. Managing multiple assignment deadlines strengthened my resilience and time management abilities. I also improved my communication skills and became more confident in expressing my thoughts and sharing my ideas.

In addition to gaining practical skills, my time at Sunway Business School shaped the way I approach situations and make decisions. I developed a greater understanding of ethical decision-making, sustainability, emotional intelligence, and critical thinking. These lessons encouraged me to become more responsible, open-minded, and conscious of the impact of my actions on society.

After graduating, I spent several months exploring career opportunities across different countries and industries. I eventually joined Pioneer Solutions, a global education consultancy based in Bangladesh, for my first professional role. I was excited to work in the international education field, as it was familiar to me through my own experience as an international student. Using my experience to support students who were making similar decisions made the opportunity especially meaningful.

I was initially hired on a probationary basis for an executive position. However, shortly after joining the company, I was offered the role of Business Development Manager. Being entrusted with such an important position at an early stage of my career has been a significant achievement, and I am immensely grateful for the opportunity.

Today, as a Business Development Manager, I am involved in various aspects of the company’s operations. The diverse knowledge I gained through the Business Management programme has provided me with a strong foundation for handling these responsibilities, including strategic planning, marketing, human resources, and accounting.

Beyond academics, I actively participated in extracurricular activities and held several leadership positions that made my university experience even more meaningful. My first leadership opportunity came during my second semester, when I was selected as a Peer Leader under the Peer Assisted Learning Programme. In my third semester, I joined the Sunway Admissions Office as a Student Ambassador, a role I continued until graduation.

During my second year, I became Vice Head of the Marketing Department for the Sunway Business School Student Concilium. In my third year, I assumed greater responsibility as Vice President of the Concilium. I also participated in various volunteering activities, including Sunway Education open days, graduation ceremonies, cultural programmes, and the Sunway Sustainable Development Goals Festival. Looking back, these experiences contributed significantly to my personal growth, broadened my perspective, helped me build meaningful friendships, and created many lasting memories.

If I had to choose one of my fondest memories at Sunway, it would be the wonderful moment when I fulfilled my dream at my convocation ceremony. Walking across the stage as a First-Class Honours graduate to receive my degree filled me with an immense sense of accomplishment and many unforgettable emotions.

I have never viewed graduation as the conclusion of my Sunway journey because, as we often say, once a Sunwayian, always a Sunwayian. Even after graduating, I continue to stay connected and remain an active member of the Sunway community.

You are welcome to connect with me on LinkedIn. I would be delighted to exchange experiences, share insights, and continue building meaningful connections within the Sunway community.
