Kelwin Tan: From Code to Classroom
From a young age, technology fascinated me. From picking up a tool to disassembling hardware to versing codes to solve complex issues, this passion led me to pursue a BSc (Hons) in Information Systems. During my studies, I honed invaluable skills in critical thinking and data analytics, which became the cornerstones of my professional journey. These skills enabled me to tackle complex, data-driven challenges with confidence.
My employment journey has been nothing short of exciting. I started as a Web Programmer, developing websites for Sunway Student LIFE. This role was a springboard that revealed a deeper passion for knowledge sharing, ultimately steering me towards a career in higher education. Today, I’m proud to be part of the Sunway Education Group, where I strive to inspire and educate the next generation.
One of my proudest achievements is having the opportunity to teach in various settings while consistently receiving positive feedback from students. Maintaining a 90% positive feedback rating is a testament to my dedication to quality education. Additionally, the programme empowered me to contribute to society through side projects in analytics while lecturing at the university, keeping me engaged with the community and enhancing my professional skills.
The decision-making skills I acquired during my studies have been crucial in navigating critical moments in both my personal life and career. As a student at Sunway, I was fortunate to receive exceptional guidance from lecturers and found the learning environment incredibly supportive. One of my fondest memories is camping outside Prof. Angela's office to consult her on assignments. Her guidance was a source of inspiration during my studies. By the way, if you ever need to camp outside a professor's office, bring snacks—it helps!
In my free time, I’m passionate about bodybuilding, a pursuit I've been dedicated to for 11 years. This passion not only keeps me fit but also instils discipline. Additionally, my outgoing and humorous nature has helped me maintain connections with my course mates, fostering lifelong friendships. Speaking of which, if laughter is the best medicine, I must be the healthiest person around!
The true start of my Sunway journey was in my first year of Foundation studies when I met Prof. Lau, an inspiring and funny lecturer who sparked my interest in the field. Although my career path solidified further through continuous interaction with Prof. Angela, it was initially unplanned. Reflecting on my journey, I realise that a youthful choice to become a researcher in technology has guided me to where I am today.
To the next generation of Sunwayians, my message is simple: “Education is important, but so are co-curricular activities. Don’t be a blank piece of paper focused solely on grades. Work on developing your soft skills too”. These skills will prove invaluable in your personal and professional life. And remember, the best way to predict your future is to create it, and maybe have a laugh or two along the way.
My favourite quote or life motto is, “The strongest mind never surrenders”. I believe that the tendency to never give up will ultimately lead to success. Perseverance and resilience are key in overcoming challenges and achieving one's goals.
