Choosing to pursue my PhD in Business at Sunway Business School was an important decision that shaped both my academic and professional journey. I was drawn to Sunway because of its strong academic reputation and close engagement with industry through its external advisory panels. I wanted a doctoral experience that combined academic rigour with relevance beyond the university.

My PhD research focused on sustainable consumption behaviour, which made Sunway an especially meaningful choice. The university’s strong commitment to sustainability closely aligned with my research interests and gave me a sense that I was pursuing my work in an environment that shared similar values.

The PhD journey also helped me develop skills that continue to benefit me today. Beyond research knowledge, it strengthened my critical thinking, analytical abilities, communication skills and perseverance. Learning to examine complex issues, defend ideas with evidence and work independently has been particularly valuable in my career as an academic, where these skills are applied across teaching, research and academic leadership.

After completing my PhD, I was given the opportunity to join Sunway Business School as a Lecturer. I remain grateful to my Dean and the university for the trust and opportunities that have allowed me to grow professionally. Today, I am a Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for the Master of Marketing (ODL) programme.

One achievement of which I am particularly proud is being entrusted with leadership responsibilities within the university. Becoming a Programme Leader has allowed me to contribute beyond teaching, including curriculum development, programme quality and the overall student experience. I am also proud to continue developing my research in marketing, sustainability and consumer behaviour. These experiences have strengthened my belief that academic work should not remain within the classroom but should create meaningful value for future generations, industry and society.

My experience at Sunway has also shaped the kind of educator I hope to be. Having once been a student here myself, I understand the importance of guidance, encouragement and being given opportunities to grow. I now have the privilege of supporting students throughout their own journeys and encouraging them to think independently, make responsible decisions and consider the wider impact of business on society.

One of my fondest memories of being a student at Sunway is simply the campus experience itself. Unlike the traditional image of a university centred only around classrooms and libraries, Sunway offered a vibrant environment where learning extended beyond the classroom. The campus surroundings, facilities and opportunities to interact with people from different backgrounds made the doctoral journey feel less isolating and created a stronger sense of community.

Looking back, Sunway Business School was not simply where I completed my PhD. It became a place that shaped my academic career, values and professional identity. Eventually, it also became a place where I was given the opportunity to return, grow and give back.
