Yoogen Valoo: Changing the Perception of Studying Actuarial Science

Yoogen Valoo is an Actuarial Executive with Etiqa Life Insurance Berhad and is about to turn 25! For Yoogen, this was a path that he dreamt of for a while. Loving mathematics since primary school, he decided to take up the actuarial career path after he found out that it was not only rewarding but also high in demand by the industry.

Yoogen’s academic achievements have not been short of excellent. After successfully completing high school and scoring 4A* in the A-Levels examination, where he received the “Top in the World” award for Mathematics, he also received a scholarship from the Public Services Department to pursue a degree in Actuarial Studies at Sunway University. Yoogen credits his success to his upbringing and the wonderful memories he made while at Sunway, engaging with people from different backgrounds and mindsets.

He also expanded his network of friends through the Maybank Ambassador Program by representing Sunway University. Suffice to say, these platforms greatly enhanced his soft skills and moulded him to be an all-rounder.

With constant support from his family, friends, and lecturers, he has learned a lot during his days at the University. Not only did he equip himself with classroom knowledge, but he was also able to instil valuable skills that are very beneficial for his career, such as time management, prudent decision making, stress management, and many more.

These skills have aided him in his job at the valuation department in Etiqa Life Insurance Berhad, the same place he completed his internship. As such, he has adapted well to the culture of the company quite quickly and enjoys his work as it gives him the hands-on experience to apply all the knowledge he acquired during his studies - mostly revolving around programming and MS Excel in calculating actuarial reserves.

Yoogen is still developing his soft skills and technical skills as there are several programming languages that are still new to him.

On what young people should develop these days, he strongly believes that self-discipline is the most important as only if one is disciplined would one be able to handle workloads and manage time wisely. In addition, he said that one must also constantly update oneself with the latest information related to one’s career and pay attention to things that are happening around them.

Most importantly, being passionate about the things one does will help one excel in one’s career. His message to the next generation of Sunwayians is “Utilize your time at the varsity to learn as much as you can as we are blessed to have so many valuable resources at Sunway University.”

To him, university life is not just about studies, but a place to develop and learn other skills as well. Lastly, his parting words to potential students - “The sky is the limit, give your best and be the best in what you do.”
