Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs) kill 41 million people each year, equivalent to 71% of all deaths globally. In Malaysia, NCDs are the leading cause of death and morbidity among adults. There is an urgent need to work in multi-disciplinary teams to find solutions for the management, prevention and control of NCDs. This priority research area includes these topics:
Cardiovascular diseases and hypertension
Cancer biology and genetics
Development of novel drugs and natural/synthetic products for cancer therapy
- Gene therapy, oncolytic virus and peptide vaccine against cancer
- Anticancer evaluation of metal thiolates/dithiolates and tin organyls
- Discovery of novel anti-cancer drugs from bio-diversity resources in Malaysia
Immunological disorders
- Biomarker and treatment for Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Genetic risk factors, allergen characterisation and vaccine development for Allergy
Mental health, cognitive function and neurodegenerative diseases
Patient management and health behaviours
- Pain research and management
- Promoters, barrier and behaviours (cancer, diabetes, AIDS, etc)
