Avery Choke Kar Sing: Recalling Unforgettable Experiences at Sunway University
Avery Choke is a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science first honours degree graduate from Sunway University under the Lancaster University program, and currently working as an iOS developer at Trust Bank in Singapore. He has experience in mobile app and web development but decided to focus on iOS after seeing the massive potential for fast-paced innovation and how this can translate to continuous improvements in user experience.
During his undergraduate studies, Avery majored in software development, taking up software development skills by taking electives such as C# programming, concurrent programming, and software architecture and design patterns while being exposed to AI technologies such as genetic algorithms, artificial neural networks, and fuzzy systems.
It has been five years since he graduated from Sunway University. He always felt Sunway University was like a second home after spending most of his days there during his studies. It has everything he needs for his studies. Lecturers were always there to help; study materials were available online and offline, with plenty of computers and a shopping mall. He never liked the early morning classes but still attended them because he enjoyed going to university. The connections provided by the lecturers exposed him to various fun and challenging activities like hackathons and programming competitions, which provided many learning opportunities. Overall, Avery enjoyed his university days, and they shaped him into who he is today.
As an IOS developer in a fast pace environment like Trust Bank, the role deals with much more than just writing code. He deals with the whole software development life cycle while communicating with the respective product owners and business analysts to determine the complexity and feasibility of a particular feature, provide estimations, and then put the story together. It also involves talking with the designers to understand the features' flow and identify the edge cases together.
However, more edge cases will be identified throughout the development, and changes will be needed. Once the feature is completed, it will go through testing by the quality assurance team, where there will be back-and-forth collaborations. That is just the gist of a basic development cycle. From time to time, there will be other tasks to be performed as well. All in all, an iOS engineer’s job scope is more than just writing code, as there will be a lot of collaboration and communication needed between the various teams.
Sunway University feels like a second home to Avery as he has spent a lot of time there where most of it was mostly for studying. His only regret is not participating in more co-curricular activities. University is more than just a place to learn academically. It is an excellent place to make connections, build leadership qualities, learn soft skills, and such. Although the University assignments help in those areas, co-curricular activities provide more opportunities to do so.
One must keep a good balance between studying and other activities within the university. All in all, one should enjoy university life.
