Internships and Real-World Experience: Labeeb Sayed Afzal's Journey
In this article, Labeeb Sayed Afzal shares his journey of professional development at Sunway University. Labeed was a Diploma in Culinary Arts student and progressed to the BSc (Hons) Culinary Management programme. During his four-year learning journey as a diploma and degree student, he had the opportunity to participate in three internships, which have played a key role in laying the groundwork for his career in the hospitality and culinary industries.
The initial internships placements were hosted by two distinguished establishments: InterContinental Kuala Lumpur and Eat and Cook Fine Dining Restaurant. Both these placements provided valuable exposure to the high standards of service and operations in the hospitality industry.
Nonetheless, it was the placement at St. Regis Kuala Lumpur that marked the pinnacle of internship experience for Labeeb. As one of the most renowned luxury hotels in Marriott International, St. Regis is celebrated for its rich heritage and commitment to high-quality service standard. Being part of this esteemed organisation was a turning point which significantly enhanced his culinary skills and professional profile. During this time at St. Regis, Labeeb learnt the dynamism and cyclical nature of hospitality operations. As an intern, Labeeb supported as a team player, and was commended for contributing to a stable and successful outcome.
Certainly, there were challenges along the way during his tenure as an intern. Working in a dynamic hospitality establishment, interns were tasked to adapt quickly to the fast-paced environment. Nevertheless, the lessons learned and the personal growth achieved through overcoming these challenges have been invaluable. Labeeb mentioned, “St. Regis has shaped me both personally and professionally. It has been an honour to be part of a team that upholds such exceptional standards.” Indeed, these lessons are necessary for students to develop resilience and effectively navigate through various situations and difficulties, especially when they transition into the workforce.
As Labeeb reflects on his experiences as an intern in these hospitality and culinary establishments, he mentioned, “I am confident that the transition into the workforce will be a natural progression.” One of the most rewarding aspects of the hospitality industry is the opportunity to interact with a diverse range of people, which fosters both personal and professional development. Unlike a traditional classroom setting, the real-world experience gained from working in diverse environments and encountering new challenges imparts valuable yet intangible knowledge and skills. The hospitality industry offers boundless opportunities for learning and personal growth, but without actively engaging in it, one will never fully grasp its potential.
To those embarking on career in the culinary field, Labeeb offered a simple piece of advice: “Regardless of how others may attempt to undermine your abilities or question your competence, it is crucial to always believe in yourself”. Time has a way of resolving challenges and providing new perspectives. Personally, Labeeb believes that pursuing one’s passion requires facing challenges and criticism. On a positive light, Labeeb highlights, “I implore you not to give up, as the difficulties you currently face are only temporary. The growth and progress you aspire to achieve may not be immediately apparent, but they will naturally unfold, revealing the true beauty of this field, which is full of surprises. So, keep your spirits high, maintain your focus on the ultimate goal, and never lose sight of your self-belief.”
