Kim Suhyeon: My Exchange Journey at Sunway University

Kim Suhyeon

In the summer of 2018, I was a proud student in Sunway University at the Department of Art and Design as an exchange student.
I spent one semester and took a total of four classes: 'English Enhancement Academic Exchange', 'Interior Design', 'Digital Photography' and 'Digital Illustration'.

The classes in 'English Enhancement Academic Exchange' were basically classes where we could learn the English language, work ethics and adaptation living abroad.

Overall, we were very satisfied that the class consisted of only four exchange students, so the lecturer gets to pay full attention and carefully offered feedback they needed.

This subject was really good that I could not only learn English language but it includes some Business Communication syllabus where we learn how to compose a resume and how to do presentations in front of many audiences.

In Interior Design class, I felt it was very different from what I learn in Korea and was very impressed.

The lessons in my University in South Korea uses computer programs such as CAD and sketch-up to express their designs, while in Sunway University it was an eye-opening experience. We had to hand make work projects such as mock up models without using the help of CAD. It was an unfamiliar experience for me although it felt difficult at first but later I got used to it with the help of friendly classmates and lecturer.

It was interesting to see the whole process of making a mock up house that I had designed using materials of my choice. My interest grew over time as I find myself spending lots of time trying to better and improve the design in each assignment.
I can still remember the feeling of accomplishment on the last day when I had to present my final assessment of the design I have prepared.

In the "Digital Photography" class, I was able to learn professional knowledge of cameras, how to take different pictures according to the subject, and the corresponding Photoshop techniques.

This class was very useful for me as someone who takes photos as a hobby and it has taught me how to use the camera professionally.

Among them, the most memorable assignment is to take portraits. I took a lot of pictures of various models and it took me a long time to emphasize the focus of their eyes in photoshop.

The feedback I received at that time is now being used well to take pictures of people in Korea as well.

In the "Digital Illustration" class, two assignments were carried out: drawing still life using Gouache and creating images expressing Malaysian culture using Wacom tablet.

In fact, this subject is very new to me and everything I attempted in this class was my first time. Still life was drawn through professional stages and Wacom tablet was used.

It was tough in the beginning, but soon after, I was able to fully adapt and complete the work because the lecturer and classmates were very helpful and willing to learn together. They helped me by teaching me the parts I didn't know.

Among the two tasks, I was most impressed with the task of creating an "Image of Malaysian Culture" using a tablet.
Of course, drawing with a tablet was a new experience and fun. However, it was way more fun when I had to research, learn and understand the culture in Malaysia to create a reference image.

The best thing about my one semester at Sunway University Department of Art and Design was that I met a lot of really kind and good people.

For someone like me who is new to the country and campus environment where everything is unfamiliar, my friends, the staff and lecturers approached me first. They welcomed me and talked to me to help me in class, and helped me adapt to the class naturally.

Also, I could learn about various cultures and how to interact with each other that I had never known before.

Until now, I'm still doing well and keeping in touch with my friends who I had met in Malaysia and communicating with each other by message or call.

Above all, thanks to them, half a year in Malaysia has become a happy memory that I will never forget.

Finally, my time in Sunway University Department of Art and Design has given me a valuable experience to broaden my horizons about design, respect and learn about different cultures, and make friends with good people.
