In this edition of our alumni newsletter, we are delighted to feature Tan Jun Jie, a distinguished graduate from the BSc (Hons) in Actuarial Studies program at Sunway University. Jun Jie, who completed his studies in 2022 as the valedictorian of his graduating class, is currently thriving as a Senior Actuarial Analyst at AIA Bhd, a leading insurance company.

Jun Jie's journey at Sunway University was marked by academic excellence and a well-rounded involvement in extracurricular activities. As a course representative for the School of Mathematical Sciences, treasurer for the Sunway Actuarial & Financial Excellence Club, sub-committee member for the Sunway Business Investment Club, and member of the LEAP Platinum program, he honed his leadership skills and built a strong professional network.

Reflecting on his time as a student, Jun Jie shared that his priorities extended beyond just achieving good grades. He aimed to develop strong communication abilities, technical expertise, problem-solving capabilities, and meaningful relationships. Effective time management was crucial, as he balanced his coursework, assignments, and active involvement in multiple clubs and societies.

Jun Jie's approach to learning was strategic: he focused on understanding core concepts rather than merely memorising formulas. By relating these concepts to real-life situations, he gained a deeper comprehension of each topic, which proved invaluable during exams and practical applications. "I believe in studying smart rather than just studying hard," he remarked.

One of the highlights of Jun Jie's academic experience was his participation in the Actuarial Practice Course conducted by Ms. Sophia. This course provided him with a significant advantage during job interviews and in his current role, enhancing his technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and presentation skills.

Jun Jie's passion for mathematics, economics, investment, and programming led him to discover the field of actuarial science, which perfectly aligned with his interests. The profession's focus on risk management particularly captivated him, and he recognised the versatility of the skills he would develop as an actuary. "The challenge of understanding and mitigating risk drew me in," he explained.

In his current role as a Senior Actuarial Analyst at AIA Bhd, Jun Jie's primary responsibilities include ensuring accurate financial reporting, conducting margin analysis, and providing insights to management on key drivers for product margins and significant expenses. He takes great pride in applying his analytical skills and contributing to the financial health and strategic decision-making of the company.

Jun Jie's journey was further facilitated by the Sunway Excellence Scholarship, a full scholarship awarded to students excelling in academics and extracurricular activities. As one of only two recipients for his intake, this scholarship not only eased his financial burden but also boosted his confidence, allowing him to pursue high-quality education without causing any concern for his parents.

When asked about advice for young people, Jun Jie emphasised the importance of developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, effective stress management, and cultivating a mindset of lifelong learning and curiosity. He encouraged following one's passion with persistence, building strong interpersonal relationships and networks, and maintaining a positive outlook, believing that every problem has a solution.

Jun Jie's motto, "Be humble, stay hungry, always appreciate," encapsulates the values he upholds: humility to grow and learn from others, a hunger for continuous improvement, and gratitude for the opportunities and support received.

Beyond his academic and professional achievements, Jun Jie leads a balanced lifestyle. In his free time, he enjoys playing sports such as badminton and swimming, activities that help him stay physically active and clear his mind. Additionally, he is passionate about expanding his knowledge in the field of finance, frequently listening to investment-related podcasts to stay informed about the current economic landscape.
