ASEAN Data Science Explorers 2021
Ryan Liew Kok Lam and Ng Jia Hui, both students from the Information Systems (Business Analytics) programme at Sunway University Malaysia have been crowned national champions of the 2021 ASEAN Data Science Explorers (ASEAN DSE) Malaysian National Finals and the 2nd Runner Up in the Regional Finals Competition held virtually on Zoom, in the last quarter of 2021.
Running for the fifth year, ASEAN DSE has a renewed focus on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that target climate and sustainability.
The duo called themselves ‘Brain Drain’ and presented the threat of mishandled electronic waste (e-waste) while their storyboard focused on how to manage e-waste. Their proposed solution comprised the implementation of a cradle-to-cradle technical cycle, as well as a mobile app to bring awareness and educate the public about e-waste will not only solve the e-waste issue but will ultimately gain sustainability for ASEAN countries from the perspective of people, planet and profit.
The topic, as well as their solution, was seen as something that can be adopted by all ASEAN countries and this caught the attention of the ASEAN Foundation, SAP Cloud and the public.
Amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, ASEAN Foundation has managed to still carry on the ADSE event until this year and continues to make a positive impact on the citizens across the ASEAN countries. They have also managed to continue equipping the students with essential digital skills.
With that, the duo made Malaysia and Sunway University extremely proud of their achievements.
