The fundraising project, a collaboration between School of Hospitality and Sunway Student Ambassadors (SSA), was organised in conjunction with World Chocolate Day.

A total profit of RM10,247 generated from the bake sale was channelled to Rumah Juara Puchong – a home for orphans, abused and under-privileged children. The funds will be utilised to purchase educational resources such as laptops, printers and other necessities for the children’s learning.

“We hope that through this bake sale project, more people will know about Rumah Juara Puchong, help them with their needs or even check on them from time to time to see if they require any assistance,” shared Siew Zhen Toong, President of SSA who oversaw the execution of the project.

The home supervisor of Rumah Juara Puchong, Pastor Raniyah Philip appreciates the help provided by SSA. “The students have been visiting us and teaching our children to do gardening work, make soaps, recycling and more. Our children also learnt teamwork and communication skills when they work together during these activities.”

This project was the idea of Professor Patrick, coach for the Malaysia Pastry Team who were champions at the World Pastry Cup in 2019. The first recipient of the Sunway University Young Chef Scholarship in 2019, Sweetie Cheang who is currently in her first year of studies for Diploma in Culinary Arts, also helped out in the pastry kitchen for the project.

Apart from baking desserts and loaves of bread for the sale, Professor Patrick created a signature cake named after his fur kid – Scooby. A total of RM400 raised from the sale of “Scooby” cakes was donated to the pet shelter – My Pets Haven, where Scooby was taken in before being adopted by Professor Patrick.

“We hope to bring to light that these animals are vulnerable, and they need to be taken care of too.” Professor Patrick hopes the effort could help raise awareness and encourage people who want to own a pet to ”Adopt, Don’t Shop”
