Discovering Professional Ethics
At Sunway University's Department of Engineering, a holistic education includes understanding professional ethics and the critical role of professional bodies in the engineering sector. Recognising the importance of real-world insights, the Department invited the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) to deliver a guest lecture on February 16, 2024. The session, led by Ir Gunasagaran Kristnan, a seasoned Civil Engineer and Fellow of IEM, was titled "Introduction to IEM."
Ir Gunasagaran provided a comprehensive overview of IEM and the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), emphasising their roles and responsibilities. He discussed how these bodies help uphold ethical standards and ensure public welfare by prescribing ethical codes for professional engineers. The lecture also highlighted the benefits IEM offers its members, from professional development opportunities to career advancements.
A significant part of the talk focused on the journey to becoming a Professional Engineer registered with BEM and a Corporate Member of IEM. This pathway, outlined by Ir Gunasagaran, resonated deeply with the students, sparking numerous questions about the tangible benefits of IEM membership and its impact on career trajectories.
The event's success was evident as students from other universities attended, underscoring the importance of understanding professional bodies' roles. The engaging session enriched students' knowledge and inspired them to consider active participation in such professional bodies, emphasising the critical intersection of ethics and engineering practice.
Overall, the guest lecture was a valuable experience, enhancing the students' understanding of professional ethics and the pivotal role of organisations like IEM in shaping ethical, competent engineers for the future.
